NGORONGORO CRATER

Tanzania National Parks & Wildlife Areas Click Here...

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area spans vast expanses of highland plains, savanna, savanna woodlands and forests. Established in 1959 as a multiple land use area, with wildlife coexisting with semi-nomadic Maasai pastoralists practicing traditional livestock grazing, it includes the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest caldera. The property has global importance for biodiversity conservation due to the presence of globally threatened species, the density of wildlife inhabiting the area, and the annual migration of wildebeest, zebra, gazelles and other animals into the northern plains. Extensive archaeological research has also yielded a long sequence of evidence of human evolution and human-environment dynamics, including early hominid footprints dating back 3.6 million years.

MOUNT KILIMANJARO

The highest mountain in Africa, snow caped and world’s highest free standing volcano. It comprises of two dormant volcanoes (Kibo 5,895m a.m.s.l and Mawenzi 5,149m a.m.s.l) and one extinct volcano (Shira 3,962m a.m.s.l) respectively. The origin of the word is not well known but it said to be a combination of the Swahili word Kilima meaning “Mountain” and the KiChagga word Njaro, loosely translated as “Whiteness” giving the name “White Mountain”.

The park can be accessed by road or flight via Kilimanjaro International Airport – about 45km to the west. The Park Headquarters and one of the ascending gates are at Marangu, about 41Km from Moshi town and 86km from Kilimanjaro International Airport. The other seven gates of Rongai, Machame, Londorosi, Lemosho, Kilema, Mweka and Umbwe are located around the mountain base and can be reached by road.

MOUNT MERU

Mount Meru is a dormant stratovolcano located 70 kilometres (43 mi) west of Kilimanjaro in southeast Arusha Region, Tanzania. At a height of 4,562.13 metres (14,968 ft), it is visible from Mount Kilimanjaro on a clear day, and is the fifth-highest of the highest mountain peaks of Africa, dependent on definition.

Mount Meru is located just north of the city of Arusha, in the Arusha Region of Tanzania. It is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, after Mount Kilimanjaro. Mount Meru is also the highest mountain/point in Arusha Region. The Momella route – which starts at Momella gate, on the eastern side of the mountain – is used to climb Mount Meru.

MOUNT OLDOINYO LENGAI

Ol Doinyo Lengai lies in the Arusha region of Tanzania, 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) south of Lake Natron and 120 kilometres (75 mi) northwest of the city of Arusha. The summit was first explored between 1904 and 1915. As of 2012, about 300,000 people live in the region, and livestock farming is the most important economic activity, although tourism is increasingly important.

Ol Doinyo Lengai is a symmetric cone[1] that rises more than 1,800 metres (5,900 ft) above the surrounding rift valley. It has two craters on either side of the mountain summit, which is formed by a 110-metre (360-foot) high ridge. The floor of the northern crater is covered with lava flows that resemble pahoehoe lavas. Small cones with sizes ranging from 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) to over 10 metres (33 ft) occur in the crater and produce lava flows from their summits and, when they collapse, from their flanks. The southern crater is inactive and sometimes filled with water. White volcanic ash deposits cover the slopes of the volcano, which have large fractures on the western flank. There are parasitic vents on Ol Doinyo Lengai's flanks, such as Kirurum Crater on the western, the Nasira cones on the northern, Dorobo crater on the northeastern, and Oltatwa Crater on the eastern flank.

USAMBARA MOUNTAINS

The Usambara Mountains of northeastern Tanzania in tropical East Africa, comprise the easternmost ranges of the Eastern Arc Mountains. The ranges of approximately 90 kilometres (56 mi) long and about half that wide, are situated in the Lushoto District of the Tanga Region. They were formed nearly two million years ago by faulting and uplifting, and are composed of Precambrian metamorphic rocks. They are split into two sub-ranges; the West Usambaras being higher than the East Usambaras, which are nearer the coast and receive more rainfall.

The mountains are clad in virgin tropical rainforest which has been isolated for a long period and they are a centre of endemism. Historically they were inhabited by Bantu, Shambaa, and Maasai people but in the eighteenth century, a Shambaa kingdom was founded by Mbegha. The kingdom eventually fell apart after a succession struggle in 1862. German colonists settled in the area which was to become German East Africa, and after World War I it became part of the British mandated territory of Tanganyika.

BAGAMOYO

The sleep atmosphere of Bagamoyo hides a history of prosperity, wealth and wonderful tales, but also sufferings and tragedy. In a way, all this is expressed in the name Bagamoyo, which means something like “Lay down the burden of your heart” or “be quiet my heart”. This can both be interpreted as the forlorn cry of the slaves leaving their destination. Bagamoyo gained its name in the caravan days when the streets where dense with difficulty and now and then caravan porters tripled the town population. Ships from distance ports where a common sight in the harbor and the shops were filled with exotic goods.

Today Bagamoyo offers a wealth of historical attractions and some of the most wonderful beaches in East Africa.

Nowadays it is mainly a fishing town dotted with coconut trees, providing beautiful beaches for quit vacation. Pangani is situated about 60km south of Tanga on the mouth of River Pangani that flows from the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

ZANZIBAR

The position of Zanzibar, which is washed by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, made this archipelago a favorable base for traders voyaging between Africa, Arabia, and India. These three cultures shaped Zanzibar’s history, traditions, food and Language. Because of the traders’ need to communicate with the natives, a new language emerged which combined Arabic, Persian, English, and Swahili.

Zanzibar is one of the main archipelagoes of Tanzania, and the name Tanzania comes from combining the names Tanganyika and Zanzibar. The name Zanzibar comes from the Arabic Zanjibar and Persian Zang-bar. It combines the worlds Zang (“Black”) + bar (“Coast, Land, Country”). Zanzibar is also called “Coast of Black”.
